Basic Concepts

Scene Safety and Assessment

First Things First: Safety!

Before helping anyone, EMRs must ensure the scene is safe for themselves, their team, and the patient. Hazards can include fire, traffic, electrical wires, or even aggressive animals.

Steps for Scene Assessment

  1. Look for hazards (fire, chemicals, unstable structures)
  2. Protect yourself (use gloves, masks, and eye protection)
  3. Assess the number of patients
  4. Identify the mechanism of injury or illness
  5. Call for additional help if needed

When Things Change

Scenes can change quickly! Stay alert and always be ready to reposition or retreat if new dangers arise.

Real-World Application

In a multi-car accident, your first job is to watch for leaking fuel or oncoming traffic before rushing to help.

Examples

  • Spotting a live power line down at a crash site and waiting for utility services.

  • Using gloves and a face shield when helping a bleeding patient.

In a Nutshell

Always check for hazards before approaching and while treating patients.
