Patient Moving and Lifting Techniques

Moving Patients Safely

Moving an injured person incorrectly can cause further harm. EMRs use special techniques to lift and move patients safely.

Lifting Principles

  • Keep your back straight and lift with your legs.
  • Communicate with your team before moving.
  • Use equipment like stretchers or backboards when possible.

Techniques

  • Log Roll: For spinal injuries, roll the patient as one unit.
  • Chair Carry: Use for conscious patients who can't walk.
  • Blanket Drag: For moving patients short distances.

When to Move

Move patients only if the scene is dangerous or to provide essential care.

Examples

  • Using a log roll technique to move a car accident victim with suspected spinal injury.

  • Team-lifting a patient onto a stretcher after a sports injury.

In a Nutshell

Safe lifting and moving keep you and your patient injury-free.
