Practical Applications

Performing CPR and Using an AED

Saving a Life with CPR and AED

When someone’s heart stops, every second counts. EMRs are trained to perform high-quality CPR and use an AED effectively.

Steps for CPR

  1. Check responsiveness and breathing.
  2. Call for help and get an AED.
  3. Start chest compressions (at least 2 inches deep, 100–120 per minute).
  4. Give rescue breaths (2 for every 30 compressions).
  5. Use the AED as soon as it arrives—follow the voice prompts.

Real-World Practice

Practicing on manikins helps build confidence and muscle memory, so you can act quickly in real emergencies.

Examples

  • A student collapses during gym class; you immediately begin CPR and use the school's AED.

  • You rotate chest compressions with a teammate at a public event until EMS arrives.
