1st Grade Math

Fundamental mathematics concepts for first grade students including basic arithmetic, counting, and number sense.

Basic Concepts

Basic Subtraction

Taking Away and Subtracting

Subtraction is about taking some things away from a group. The sign for subtraction is \( - \).

How Subtraction Works

If you start with a group and take some away, subtraction tells you how many are left.

  • If you have 5 cookies and eat 2, you have \( 5 - 2 = 3 \) cookies left.

Using Objects to Subtract

You can use toys, blocks, or even your fingers to help with subtraction. Start with five, take away two, and count what's left.

Subtraction in Life

Subtraction is helpful when you spend or give away things, or want to know how many you have left after using some.

Examples

  • Eating 3 out of 6 grapes and counting the rest.

  • Giving away 2 stickers from a collection of 7.

In a Nutshell

Subtraction means taking away from a group and finding what remains.
