Basic Addition

Adding Numbers Together

Addition is about putting groups of things together to find out how many you have in all. The sign for addition is \( + \).

How Addition Works

When you add, you start with one group, then add another group, and count how many things there are total.

  • If you have 2 apples and get 3 more apples, you have \( 2 + 3 = 5 \) apples.

Using Your Fingers

You can use your fingers to help add small numbers. Hold up two fingers, then add three more; count them all to get five.

Addition in Real Life

We use addition when we want to find out how many things we have after getting more.

Examples

  • Putting together 4 red blocks and 2 blue blocks to find the total.

  • Adding how many candies you get from two friends.
