MAP 3rd Grade Math

A comprehensive math course designed for third grade students to build foundational skills in numbers, operations, geometry, and data analysis.

Advanced Topics

Working with Fractions

Understanding Fractions

A fraction shows parts of a whole. It uses two numbers: the top (numerator) and the bottom (denominator).

  • Numerator: Number of parts you have.
  • Denominator: Total parts the whole is split into.

Visualizing Fractions

Imagine cutting a pizza into 4 pieces. Each piece is \( \frac{1}{4} \) of the pizza.

Comparing Fractions

Fractions with the same bottom number are easy to compare. The bigger the top number, the more you have.

Real-Life Fractions

Fractions are everywhere! They help us measure ingredients in recipes, share snacks, and tell time.

Key Formula

\[\frac{a}{b}\]

Examples

  • You eat 2 out of 8 slices of pizza: \( \frac{2}{8} \) slices eaten.

  • A glass half full is \( \frac{1}{2} \) of the glass.

In a Nutshell

Fractions show how much of something you have out of a whole.
