Exploring Geometry: Shapes and Their Properties

Shapes and Their Features

Geometry is the study of shapes and their properties. Third graders learn to identify shapes, count sides and corners, and understand what makes each shape special.

Common Shapes

  • Triangles: 3 sides, 3 corners
  • Squares: 4 equal sides, 4 corners
  • Rectangles: 2 pairs of equal sides, 4 corners
  • Circles: Round, no corners

Why Know Shapes?

Knowing about shapes helps us build, draw, and understand the spaces around us.

Shapes in the Real World

We see shapes in road signs, books, and playground equipment!

Examples

  • A stop sign is shaped like an octagon with 8 sides.

  • A window can be a rectangle or a square.

In a Nutshell

Geometry helps us recognize and describe the shapes we see every day.
