Basic Concepts

Introduction to Multiplication and Division

Multiplication and Division Basics

Multiplication is like adding the same number over and over. Division means splitting something into equal groups.

Multiplication

  • Shows how many in total when you have equal groups.
  • \( 4 \times 3 = 12 \) means four groups of three make twelve.

Division

  • Splits a number into equal parts.
  • \( 12 \div 3 = 4 \) means twelve split into three groups is four in each group.

Why Learn These?

Multiplication and division help you with sharing, grouping, and understanding patterns in math.

Everyday Math

We use multiplication when we count packs of crayons, and division when we share cookies with friends.

Examples

  • If you have 5 bags with 6 marbles each, \( 5 \times 6 = 30 \) marbles in all.

  • Share 24 candies among 4 friends: \( 24 \div 4 = 6 \) candies each.

In a Nutshell

Multiplication is repeated addition; division is splitting into equal groups.
