Understanding Numbers and Place Value

What Are Numbers and Place Value?

Numbers help us count, measure, and compare things in our world. Place value means that the position of each digit in a number gives it a different value. In third grade, students work with numbers up to 1,000 and beyond!

Place Value Chart

  • Ones (1)
  • Tens (10)
  • Hundreds (100)
  • Thousands (1,000)

Each place is ten times bigger than the one before it.

Why Is Place Value Important?

Place value helps us understand big and small numbers, add and subtract correctly, and compare numbers easily.

Real-World Connections

We use place value every time we read the price tags in a store, tell the time, or count our savings in a piggy bank.

Fun Fact

Did you know the number 2 in 245 means 200, because it's in the hundreds place?

Examples

  • The number 537 has 5 hundreds, 3 tens, and 7 ones.

  • In 2,431, the 4 is in the hundreds place, so it means 400.

In a Nutshell

Place value helps us know what each digit in a number means.
