Addition and Subtraction Strategies

Building Addition and Subtraction Skills

Addition means putting numbers together to make a bigger number. Subtraction means taking away to find what’s left. Third graders learn to add and subtract numbers up to 1,000 using different strategies.

Strategies to Solve Problems

  • Stack and Add/Subtract: Write numbers in columns.
  • Number Lines: Jump forward for addition, backward for subtraction.
  • Break Apart Numbers: Split numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones to make math easier.

Why Use Strategies?

Strategies help you solve problems faster and make fewer mistakes!

Real-World Uses

We use addition and subtraction to figure out how much money we have, how many minutes until recess, or how many apples are left in a basket.

Examples

  • 467 + 128 = 595. Stack the numbers and add each column.

  • If you have 400 stickers and give away 127, you subtract: 400 - 127 = 273 stickers left.

In a Nutshell

Addition and subtraction strategies make solving math problems easier and quicker.
