Order of Operations

Solving Equations in the Right Order

Sometimes math problems have lots of steps. The order you solve them in makes a big difference!

The Magic Rule: PEMDAS

Remember this order:

  • Parentheses first
  • Exponents (small numbers above)
  • Multiplication and Division (left to right)
  • Addition and Subtraction (left to right)

If you mix up the order, you might get the wrong answer.

Why Use It?

The order of operations helps everyone solve problems the same way.

Real-World Application

  • Calculating total costs with discounts and taxes
  • Figuring out complicated game scores

Example Equation

\[ 3 + 6 \times (5 + 4) ÷ 3 - 7 \]

Key Formula

\[\text{PEMDAS: Parentheses } \rightarrow \text{ Exponents } \rightarrow \text{ Multiplication/Division } \rightarrow \text{ Addition/Subtraction}\]

Examples

  • Solve 8 + 2 × 5 = 18, not 50, because you multiply before adding.

  • Calculate (4 + 3) × 2 = 14 by doing the parentheses first.

In a Nutshell

PEMDAS helps you solve math problems with many steps in the right order.
