5th Grade Math

Advanced operations, measurement, and data analysis for fifth grade students.

Basic Concepts

Fractions and Decimals

Working with Parts of a Whole

Fractions and decimals help us describe pieces of things, like slices of cake or parts of a dollar.

Adding and Subtracting Fractions

To add or subtract fractions, make sure the bottom numbers (denominators) are the same. If they aren’t, find a common denominator.

Multiplying and Dividing Fractions

Multiply across the top and bottom for multiplication. For division, flip the second fraction and multiply!

Decimals

Decimals are another way to show parts of a whole, especially with money or measurements. Line up the decimal points when adding or subtracting.

Real-Life Uses

  • Cooking recipes (measuring cups)
  • Money (dollars and cents)
  • Sports statistics

Examples

  • Add 2/5 + 1/5 to find out how much pizza is left.

  • Multiply 0.4 × 0.5 to figure out how much of a liter you have.

In a Nutshell

Use fractions and decimals to describe and solve problems about parts of a whole.
