Observing and Measuring Weather

How Do We Observe Weather?

Scientists, called meteorologists, use tools to measure and watch the weather. You can be a weather watcher, too!

Weather Tools

  • Thermometer: Measures temperature (how hot or cold it is).
  • Rain Gauge: Measures how much rain has fallen.
  • Wind Vane: Shows which way the wind is blowing.
  • Anemometer: Measures how fast the wind is blowing.

Recording and Sharing

By measuring and recording the weather each day, we can predict what might happen tomorrow!

Try Making Your Own Tools

You can make a simple rain gauge with a jar and ruler, or a wind vane with paper and a straw.

Examples

  • Using a thermometer to check if it’s hot or cold outside.

  • Measuring rainfall in a cup after a storm.

In a Nutshell

We use special tools and careful observation to learn about the weather.
