1st Grade Science

Introduction to scientific concepts and natural world exploration for first grade students.

Basic Concepts

Using Your Senses

Discovering with Senses

You have five senses—seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. These help you explore and learn about the world.

The Five Senses

  • Sight: Use your eyes to see colors, shapes, and movement.
  • Hearing: Use your ears to listen to sounds like music or birds singing.
  • Smell: Use your nose to sniff flowers or food.
  • Taste: Use your tongue to taste sweet, sour, or salty things.
  • Touch: Use your skin to feel if something is hot, cold, soft, or rough.

Real Life Science

When you bake cookies, you smell them, see them turn golden brown, hear the timer, feel the warm cookie, and taste the yummy treat!

Safety First

Always ask an adult before smelling or tasting something you don’t know.

Examples

  • Noticing the smell of rain before a storm

  • Touching a soft puppy and a rough rock

In a Nutshell

Your senses help you explore and understand your world every day.
