Exploring Habitats

What is a Habitat?

A habitat is a special place where animals and plants live. Each habitat has everything living things need—food, water, shelter, and space.

Types of Habitats

  • Forest: Lots of trees and animals like deer and birds.
  • Pond: Water for fish, frogs, and ducks.
  • Desert: Very dry, with cacti and lizards.

Why Are Habitats Important?

Habitats keep living things safe and healthy. If habitats change, animals and plants might have to move or find new homes.

Exploring Near You

Think about the habitats you see—maybe a garden, a park, or a pond!

Examples

  • A bird building a nest in a tree

  • A frog swimming in a pond
