1st Grade Science

Introduction to scientific concepts and natural world exploration for first grade students.

Basic Concepts

What is Science?

Learning About the World

Science is a way to explore and understand everything around us. Scientists ask questions, look for answers, and discover how things work. You can be a scientist too by being curious and trying to figure things out!

The Scientific Method

Scientists use steps to solve problems:

  • Ask a question
  • Make a guess (called a hypothesis)
  • Try things out (do experiments)
  • See what happens
  • Share what you learned

Science is Everywhere

Whether you are watching clouds, planting seeds, or building with blocks, you are using science!

Why Is Science Important?

Science helps us stay healthy, build cool things, and take care of our planet.

Being a Young Scientist

Use your senses—look, listen, touch, smell, and taste (when safe!)—to explore and learn.

Examples

  • Looking at how ice melts in a sunny spot

  • Asking why leaves fall from trees

In a Nutshell

Science is all about exploring, asking questions, and finding answers about our world.

Key Terms

Science
The study of the world using observation and experiments.
Hypothesis
A guess you can test to see if it is right.
