1st Grade Science

Introduction to scientific concepts and natural world exploration for first grade students.

Basic Concepts

Living and Nonliving Things

What is Alive?

Some things are alive (living), and some things are not (nonliving). Living things grow, change, need food and water, and can have babies.

Living Things

  • People, animals, and plants are living.
  • They breathe, eat, and can move or grow.

Nonliving Things

  • Toys, rocks, and water are nonliving.
  • They do not grow, eat, or have babies.

Why Does It Matter?

Knowing what is living and nonliving helps you take care of pets, plants, and our planet.

Sorting Game

Try sorting things around you into “living” or “nonliving” groups!

Examples

  • A tree grows from a seed (living)

  • A chair stays the same size (nonliving)

In a Nutshell

Living things grow and change, but nonliving things do not.
