Algebraic Expressions and Equations

Unlocking Algebra

Algebra uses letters and symbols to represent unknown values—like a puzzle where you solve for the missing piece.

Expressions

An expression is a combination of numbers, variables, and operations, but it doesn't have an equals sign (e.g., \( 2x + 3 \)).

Equations

An equation says two things are equal. The goal is to find the value of the variable that makes it true.

Solving Equations

  • Get the variable on one side by doing the same thing to both sides.
  • Always check your solution by plugging it back in.

Why Learn Algebra?

Algebra shows up in science, engineering, and even video game coding!

Key Formula

\[x = \frac{b}{a}\]

Examples

  • Solving \( 2x + 3 = 7 \) gives \( x = 2 \).

  • If \( y - 4 = 10 \), then \( y = 14 \).

In a Nutshell

Algebra helps solve for unknowns using logic and rules.

Key Terms

Variable
A symbol (usually a letter) that stands for an unknown value.
Equation
A mathematical statement that two expressions are equal.
