SSAT Upper Level Quantitative (Math)

This subject focuses on the quantitative reasoning and mathematical skills required for the SSAT Upper Level exam.

Basic Concepts

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Mastering Parts of a Whole

Fractions, decimals, and percents all show parts of a whole. Knowing how to switch between them is key on the SSAT!

How to Convert

  • Fraction to Decimal: Divide the top by the bottom (\( \frac{1}{4} = 0.25 \)).
  • Decimal to Percent: Move the decimal two places right and add a percent sign (\( 0.25 = 25% \)).
  • Percent to Fraction: Write the percent over 100 and simplify (\( 25% = \frac{25}{100} = \frac{1}{4} \)).

Operations with Fractions and Decimals

Always find common denominators to add or subtract fractions. For decimals, line up the decimal points.

Why Is This Important?

Understanding these helps in shopping, cooking, and sports—anywhere you compare parts and wholes!

Visualize It

Drawing pie charts or bar models can make comparing fractions, decimals, and percents easier.

Examples

  • Half a pizza is \( \frac{1}{2} \), or 0.5, or 50%.

  • If a shirt is 30% off, you pay 70% of its price.

In a Nutshell

Fractions, decimals, and percents are different ways to express parts of a whole.
