Basic Concepts

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Children

BLS: The Foundation of PALS

Basic Life Support (BLS) is the initial care provided to children in cardiac or respiratory arrest. It's the first step before advanced interventions and can save lives!

Key Steps of Pediatric BLS

  1. Check responsiveness and breathing
  2. Activate emergency response
  3. Start high-quality chest compressions
  4. Give rescue breaths
  5. Use an AED if available
  • Compression rate: 100–120/min
  • Depth: About 1/3 the chest, or 5 cm in children

Differences from Adult BLS

  • Children need smaller, gentler compressions
  • Use one or two hands, depending on the child's size

Why BLS Matters

Early, effective BLS doubles or triples the chance of survival in pediatric emergencies.

Examples

  • A bystander starts CPR on a child who collapses at the playground.

  • A teacher uses an AED after a student suddenly collapses.

In a Nutshell

BLS is the immediate, hands-on care that keeps children alive until advanced help arrives.

Key Terms

CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or chest compressions and rescue breaths to keep blood flowing.
AED
Automated external defibrillator, a device that can shock a heart back into rhythm.
