Exploring Matter: Solids, Liquids, and Gases

What Is Matter?

Everything around us is made of matter. Matter can be a solid, liquid, or gas.

  • Solids keep their shape, like a block or a rock.
  • Liquids can be poured, like water or juice.
  • Gases are all around us, like the air we breathe.

How Does Matter Change?

Matter can change from one kind to another. When ice (a solid) melts, it becomes water (a liquid). When water is heated, it can turn into steam (a gas)!

Why Learning About Matter Is Fun

Knowing about solids, liquids, and gases helps us understand everything from making ice cubes to blowing up balloons.

Examples

  • Pouring water from a cup (liquid).

  • Watching ice melt on a warm day (solid to liquid).

In a Nutshell

Matter can be solid, liquid, or gas, and it can change from one form to another.

Key Terms

Solid
Matter that keeps its shape.
Liquid
Matter that flows and takes the shape of its container.
Gas
Matter that spreads out to fill the space it is in.
