Rapid Response and Code Blue

Acting Fast to Save Lives

When a patient’s condition suddenly worsens, nurses must respond rapidly. Rapid Response Teams and Code Blue protocols are designed to get expert help to the bedside fast.

Steps in a Code

  • Recognize signs of cardiac or respiratory arrest.
  • Call for help immediately.
  • Begin CPR and use the defibrillator if needed.
  • Assign roles to team members for efficiency.

Staying Calm Under Pressure

Nurses must remain calm, focus on their training, and communicate clearly, even when every second counts!

On-the-Job Example

During a Code Blue, the nurse starts compressions while another prepares medications and a third documents the event.
