Exploring Forms of Energy

What Is Energy?

Energy is what makes things happen! It comes in many forms and can change from one type to another. We use energy every day, whether we’re running, eating, or charging our phones.

Types of Energy

  • Kinetic Energy: The energy of moving things. When you run or a car drives, that's kinetic energy.
  • Potential Energy: Stored energy. A stretched rubber band or a raised hammer has potential energy.
  • Thermal Energy: The energy of heat. It makes things feel warm.
  • Light Energy: The energy we see as light, like from the Sun or a flashlight.
  • Electrical Energy: The energy that powers your phone and TV.

Energy Transformation

Energy can change from one form to another. When you eat food (chemical energy) and ride your bike (kinetic energy), you're transforming energy!

Real-World Connections

  • When you turn on a lamp, electrical energy becomes light and thermal energy.
  • Roller coasters use potential energy at the top and kinetic energy as they zoom down.

Examples

  • A bouncing basketball has kinetic energy.

  • A battery stores potential chemical energy.

In a Nutshell
