6th Grade Science

Investigating forces, energy, and Earth's place in the universe.

Basic Concepts

Earth, Sun, and Moon Relationships

Our Place in Space

Earth doesn't float alone in space. It's part of a system with the Sun and Moon, and their movements create some of the amazing changes we see every day and night!

Earth's Movements

  • Rotation: Earth spins on its axis, causing day and night.
  • Revolution: Earth travels around the Sun, making a year.

The Moon’s Movements

The Moon orbits Earth, and as it moves, different parts are lit by the Sun, creating the Moon's phases.

Eclipses and Tides

Sometimes, the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up for solar and lunar eclipses. The Moon’s gravity also pulls Earth’s oceans, causing high and low tides.

Real-World Connections

  • The time of day changes as Earth rotates.
  • Ocean tides rise and fall because of the Moon.

Examples

  • We have day and night because Earth spins on its axis.

  • The Moon goes through phases, like full moon and new moon.

In a Nutshell

The movements of Earth, Sun, and Moon create days, years, tides, and eclipses.
