5th Grade Science

A fun and engaging exploration of physical and chemical changes, Earth's systems, and scientific reasoning for 5th grade students.

Basic Concepts

Chemical Changes

What Are Chemical Changes?

Chemical changes create a new substance with different properties. During a chemical change, particles rearrange to form something new!

Signs of Chemical Changes

  • Color change (like a browning apple).
  • Gas production (bubbles when vinegar is mixed with baking soda).
  • Temperature change (a hand warmer getting hot).
  • Formation of a precipitate (a solid forming in a liquid).

Chemical Changes You Know

  • Cooking food: The heat changes the ingredients into something yummy and new.
  • Burning wood: The wood turns into ash, smoke, and gas.

Can Chemical Changes Be Reversed?

Most chemical changes cannot be undone. Once bread is baked, you can't turn it back into dough!

Why Do Chemical Changes Matter?

Chemical changes power our bodies, help cook our food, and even clean our water!

Examples

  • Rust forming on a bike.

  • Baking a cake.

In a Nutshell
