4th Grade Math

Fractions, decimals, and geometric concepts for fourth grade students.

Basic Concepts

Introduction to Decimals

What Are Decimals?

Decimals are another way to show parts of a whole, just like fractions. Instead of using a line, decimals use a dot called the decimal point.

For example, 0.5 is the same as \( \frac{1}{2} \).

Place Value in Decimals

The first number after the decimal point is the tenths place, then the hundredths, and so on.

  • 0.3 means 3 tenths, or \( \frac{3}{10} \).
  • 0.25 means 25 hundredths, or \( \frac{25}{100} \).

Why Decimals?

Decimals are useful for money, measuring, and when you want to be very exact!

Examples

  • A dollar and fifty cents is written as $1.50.

  • Measuring 2.75 meters in a race.

In a Nutshell

Decimals show parts of a whole using a dot and place value.
