4th Grade Math

Fractions, decimals, and geometric concepts for fourth grade students.

Advanced Topics

Converting Fractions and Decimals

Switching Between Fractions and Decimals

Some numbers can be written as both fractions and decimals. To convert:

  • Divide the numerator by the denominator for fractions.
  • Read the decimal and say it as a fraction.

Examples

  • \( \frac{1}{4} = 0.25 \) because 1 divided by 4 is 0.25.
  • 0.5 is \( \frac{1}{2} \) because 5 is in the tenths place.

Why Convert?

This skill is super helpful for understanding money, measurements, and data.

Examples

  • Writing half of a pizza as 0.5 or \( \frac{1}{2} \).

  • Converting 0.75 meters to \( \frac{3}{4} \) of a meter.

In a Nutshell

Fractions and decimals can often show the same value in different forms.
