Comparing and Contrasting Information

What Does Compare and Contrast Mean?

To compare is to look for similarities. To contrast is to look for differences. The SSAT often asks you to do both with information and characters in a passage.

How to Compare and Contrast

  • Look for signal words like "similarly," "both," "however," and "unlike."
  • Make a simple chart or list things that are the same and things that are different.
  • Focus on key points, not tiny details.

Why is This Useful?

This skill helps you organize information and better understand what you read. It’s also handy for writing essays and reports.

Practice in Daily Life

You use this skill when choosing between two movies, comparing sports teams, or deciding what snack to eat!

Examples

  • Comparing two characters who both love soccer, but one is shy and the other is outgoing.

  • Contrasting the weather in summer (hot and sunny) with winter (cold and snowy).

In a Nutshell
