Working with Fractions

Understanding Fractions

Fractions show parts of a whole. If you cut a pizza into 4 pieces and eat 1, you’ve eaten \( \frac{1}{4} \) of the pizza.

What are Fractions?

A fraction has two parts:

  • Top number (numerator): How many parts you have.
  • Bottom number (denominator): How many equal parts in total.

Comparing Fractions

Fractions can be bigger or smaller. \( \frac{1}{2} \) is more than \( \frac{1}{4} \) because half of something is more than just one piece out of four.

Real-World Connection

Fractions are everywhere—like sharing a chocolate bar or measuring cups for baking!

Key Formula

\[\frac{a}{b}\]

Examples

  • If you have 2 out of 8 slices of cake, you have \( \frac{2}{8} \) of the cake.

  • Half a glass of juice is \( \frac{1}{2} \).

In a Nutshell

Fractions help us talk about parts and sharing.

Key Terms

Numerator
The top number in a fraction; it shows how many parts you have.
Denominator
