Estimation and Checking

Estimation and Double-Checking

Estimating means making a smart guess. It’s helpful when you want a quick answer or to check if your work makes sense.

Why Estimate?

  • Saves time when you don’t need an exact answer.
  • Helps catch mistakes by seeing if your answer is reasonable.

Checking Your Work

  • Reread the problem and review your steps.
  • Try solving it a different way to see if you get the same answer.

Examples

  • Estimate 39 + 22 as about 60 before calculating the exact answer.

  • Double-check subtraction by adding the answer to the smaller number to see if you get the bigger number.
