MAP 6th Grade Math

A comprehensive course designed to build foundational and advanced math skills for 6th-grade students, preparing them for the MAP assessment and real-world problem-solving.

Basic Concepts

Ratios and Proportions

Comparing Quantities

Ratios let you compare two amounts. If you have 2 apples and 3 oranges, the ratio of apples to oranges is 2:3.

Understanding Ratios

Ratios can be written with a colon (2:3), as a fraction (\( \frac{2}{3} \)), or with words ("2 to 3").

Proportions

A proportion says that two ratios are equal. Solving proportions helps you figure out missing values when things are scaled up or down.

Solving Proportions

If \( \frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d} \), you can find any missing number by cross-multiplying: \( a \times d = b \times c \).

Real-World Uses

  • Ratios are used in recipes, mixing paint, or comparing distances.
  • Proportions help with scale models, maps, and resizing images.

Examples

  • Mixing 1 cup of juice with 4 cups of water is a 1:4 ratio.

  • If a map says 1 inch = 10 miles, 3 inches represents 30 miles.

In a Nutshell

Ratios compare two things, and proportions show when two ratios are equal.
