MAP 6th Grade Math

A comprehensive course designed to build foundational and advanced math skills for 6th-grade students, preparing them for the MAP assessment and real-world problem-solving.

Basic Concepts

Arithmetic Operations with Integers

Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Dividing Integers

Integers are whole numbers and their opposites, like -3, 0, and 7. Knowing how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide them helps you solve many math problems.

Rules for Operations

  • Adding two positives or two negatives stays positive or negative.
  • Adding a positive and a negative: subtract their values; the sign is the one with the bigger absolute value.
  • Multiplying or dividing integers: if the signs are the same, the answer is positive; if different, it's negative.

Real-World Uses

  • Temperatures above and below zero.
  • Keeping score in games where points can be gained or lost.
  • Balancing deposits and withdrawals in a bank account.

Examples

  • If you owe $5 (−5) and get $10 (+10), your balance is \( 10 + (−5) = 5 \).

  • The temperature drops from 3°C to −2°C, a change of \( 3 − (−2) = 5 \) degrees.

In a Nutshell

Integers include positive and negative numbers, and knowing their operations is key for real-life math.
