Previewing and Predicting

Getting Ready to Read

Before you start reading, take a few moments to look at the title, pictures, and headings. This is called previewing. Then, try to guess what the text will be about—this is predicting.

Why do this? It helps your brain get ready, so you understand more and remember what you read. Keep checking your predictions as you read to see if they were right!

Examples

  • Looking at the cover of a book and guessing what might happen in the story.

  • Reading the headings in a science article to predict what you'll learn.
