Evaluating Author's Purpose and Point of View

Why Did the Author Write This?

Every author has a reason for writing. Understanding the author's purpose and point of view helps you see why they chose certain words or included specific details.

Types of Purpose

  • To Inform: Give facts or explain something.
  • To Persuade: Try to change your mind or opinion.
  • To Entertain: Tell a story or make you laugh.

Point of View

Point of view is who is telling the story. Is it a character (first person) or a narrator outside the story (third person)?

Why This Matters

Knowing the purpose and point of view helps you read more carefully and understand the author’s message.

Examples

  • A commercial tries to persuade you to buy a toy.

  • A diary entry uses 'I' to show the main character’s feelings.
