Understanding Vocabulary in Context

What Is Vocabulary in Context?

Vocabulary in context means figuring out what a word means by looking at how it is used in a sentence or story. Sometimes, you might not know a word, but you can use other words around it to help you!

How Do You Do It?

  1. Read the whole sentence with the tricky word.
  2. Look for clues like synonyms (words that mean the same), antonyms (opposites), or examples nearby.
  3. Try replacing the word with another that makes sense.

Why Is This Helpful?

Knowing how to use context clues helps you understand stories better and learn new words without having to ask or look them up every time.

Real-World Connection

If you see a sign that says "Caution: Slippery," and people are walking carefully, you can guess what "slippery" means even if you haven't heard it before.

Examples

  • In 'The frigid wind made everyone shiver,' you can guess 'frigid' means very cold.

  • If a passage says, 'She was elated, or very happy, to see her puppy,' the context tells you 'elated' means 'very happy.'

In a Nutshell

Use the words around a new word to figure out what it means.
