ISEE Primary 4 Math

ISEE Primary 4 Math covers essential mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills tailored for fourth-grade students preparing for the ISEE exam.

Advanced Topics

Fractions and Decimals

What Are Fractions?

Fractions represent parts of a whole. The top number is the numerator (how many parts you have), and the bottom is the denominator (how many total parts).

  • \( \frac{1}{2} \) means half
  • \( \frac{3}{4} \) means three out of four parts

Decimals

Decimals also show parts of a whole but use a dot called a decimal point. For example, 0.5 is another way to write \( \frac{1}{2} \).

Comparing and Using Fractions and Decimals

  • \( 0.75 = \frac{3}{4} \)
  • Use fractions and decimals when measuring or dividing things up.

Real-World Connections

  • Sharing pizza slices (fractions)
  • Reading prices in dollars and cents (decimals)

Key Formula

\[\frac{a}{b}\]

Examples

  • If you eat 2 out of 8 slices of pizza, you've eaten \( \frac{2}{8} \) or \( \frac{1}{4} \) of the pizza.

  • 0.25 of a dollar is the same as a quarter.

In a Nutshell

Fractions and decimals help us talk about parts of things, like sharing or measuring.

Key Terms

Numerator
The top number in a fraction that tells how many parts you have.
Denominator
The bottom number in a fraction that tells how many total parts there are.
