Learning New Words

Sometimes, you find words you don’t know while reading. You can often figure out what these words mean by looking at the sentences around them. This is called using context clues.

Types of Context Clues

  • Definition Clues: The word is explained right after it.
  • Example Clues: The word is used with examples.
  • Restatement Clues: The word is said in another way.
  • Contrast Clues: The word is compared to something different.

Why Context Clues Are Helpful

Context clues help you understand the story without stopping to look up every new word.

Examples

  • The puppy was famished. He ate his food quickly. (Famished probably means very hungry.)
