Basic Concepts

Making Inferences

What Does It Mean to Make an Inference?

Making an inference is when you use clues from the text and what you already know to figure something out that isn’t directly stated. It’s a bit like being a detective!

How to Make Inferences

  • Look for hints in the text.
  • Think about your own experiences.
  • Combine both to guess what’s happening or how someone feels.

Why Inferences Are Important

Inferences help you understand more than just the words on the page. They help you read between the lines and become a super reader.

Helpful Questions

  • "Why did the character do that?"
  • "How do you think the person feels?"

Examples

  • If a character is shivering and putting on a jacket, you can infer that it is cold.

  • If someone is smiling after getting a letter, you can infer the letter brought good news.
