Identifying Author’s Purpose

Why Did the Author Write This?

Every author has a reason for writing. The author’s purpose is what the writer hopes you will do or feel after reading. The most common purposes are to inform, entertain, or persuade.

Types of Author’s Purpose

  • Inform: Give facts or teach you something.
  • Entertain: Make you enjoy the story.
  • Persuade: Try to change your mind or opinion.

How to Tell

Look for clues in the title, the words used, and the main idea. Ask, "Is the author teaching, telling a story, or trying to make me do something?"

Practice

Try to guess the purpose each time you read a new passage!

Examples

  • A story about a superhero saving the day is meant to entertain.

  • A text telling you how to wash your hands is meant to inform.
