How to Use Context Clues

If you find a word you don’t know, look at the words and sentences around it for clues. Sometimes, pictures can also help!

  • Read the whole sentence.
  • Think about what makes sense in the story.
  • Try to use the other words as hints.

This strategy helps you figure out new words all by yourself.

Examples

  • You see the word 'glistened' and read 'The snow glistened in the sun.' You guess it means 'shined.'

  • You read 'The puppy yawned because he was sleepy.' You know 'yawned' means he is tired.
