Understanding Author's Purpose

Why Do Authors Write?

Every author writes for a reason. The author’s purpose is the reason they tell the story or share information.

Three Main Purposes

  • To Inform: Give facts or teach something new.
  • To Entertain: Tell a story for fun.
  • To Persuade: Try to convince you to think or do something.

How to Find the Author’s Purpose

  • Look at the words the author uses.
  • Think about what you learned or how you felt.
  • Ask, "Is this trying to teach me, make me laugh, or change my mind?"

Why It Matters

Knowing the author’s purpose helps you read smarter and understand stories in a new way.

Examples

  • A funny story about a talking cat is written to entertain.

  • A book about how plants grow is written to inform.
