Finding Details

What are Details?

Details are the little pieces of information that tell us more about the main idea. They are like the leaves and branches of our tree, adding color and life!

Types of Details

  • Who is in the story?
  • What happened?
  • Where did it happen?
  • When did it happen?
  • How or why did it happen?

How to Spot Details

  • Look for words that describe, explain, or list things.
  • Pay attention to what the characters do and say.
  • Notice facts or examples that support the main idea.

Why Details Matter

Details help the story make sense. They help us picture what’s happening and understand the story better.

Examples

  • In a story about a trip to the zoo, details include the animals seen and the weather that day.

  • If the main idea is 'Sam builds a snowman,' details might be 'He used a carrot for the nose' and 'He wore red mittens.'
