Understanding Area and Perimeter

Measuring Area and Perimeter

Area tells us how much space is inside a shape. Perimeter is the distance around the shape.

Area

  • To find the area of a rectangle, multiply its length by its width: \( \text{Area} = \text{length} \times \text{width} \)

Perimeter

  • Add up the lengths of all the sides of a shape.

Why Area and Perimeter Matter

These measurements help us figure out things like how much carpet to buy or how much fence we need.

Key Formula

\[Area = l \times w\]

Examples

  • A rectangle with sides 4 and 6 has area 24 (4 × 6) and perimeter 20 (4 + 6 + 4 + 6).

  • You need to know perimeter to put a fence around a garden.

In a Nutshell

Area measures space inside; perimeter measures distance around.
