Advanced Topics

Fractions as Numbers

What are Fractions?

Fractions show parts of a whole. Think of a pizza sliced into equal pieces!

Reading and Writing Fractions

  • The top number is the numerator (how many parts you have).
  • The bottom number is the denominator (how many equal parts in all).

Comparing Fractions

  • Fractions with the same denominator are easy to compare.
  • \( \frac{2}{4} \) is smaller than \( \frac{3}{4} \) because 2 is less than 3.

Using Fractions in Real Life

Fractions help when measuring, cooking, or sharing things evenly.

Examples

  • Half a chocolate bar is written as 1/2.

  • If a pizza is cut into 8 slices and you eat 3, you ate 3/8.

In a Nutshell

Fractions help us talk about parts of a whole and compare pieces.
