Addition and Subtraction Strategies

Adding and Subtracting Big Numbers

In third grade, you'll use new ways to add and subtract numbers up to 1,000 and beyond!

Addition Tricks

  • Regrouping (Carrying): When numbers add up to more than 9 in a column, you regroup the extras to the next place.
  • Open Number Line: Draw a line and "jump" in parts to make adding easier.

Subtraction Tricks

  • Regrouping (Borrowing): If you can't subtract a smaller number from a bigger one, borrow from the next place.
  • Counting Up: Start at the smaller number and count up to the bigger number to find the difference.

Checking Your Work

Always double-check with the opposite operation!

Examples

  • 528 + 247 = 775 (add ones, then tens, then hundreds, regrouping as needed)

  • 904 - 367 = 537 (regroup in the tens and hundreds place if you need to borrow)

In a Nutshell

Addition and subtraction are ways to combine and separate numbers, using strategies to make math easier.
