Metabolism: Anabolic and Catabolic Pathways

What Is Metabolism?

Metabolism is the sum of all chemical reactions in a living thing. These reactions are organized into pathways that either build up or break down molecules.

Two Main Types

  • Anabolism: Builds larger molecules from smaller ones. Uses energy.
  • Catabolism: Breaks big molecules down into smaller ones. Releases energy.

Why Do We Need Metabolism?

Metabolism helps us grow, move, and repair tissues. It’s like a busy factory, with some workers putting things together and others taking things apart.

Key Pathways

  • Glycolysis: Breaks down glucose for energy.
  • Photosynthesis: Plants use sunlight to make food (anabolic!).

Examples

  • Muscles use catabolic reactions to release energy during exercise.

  • Plants use anabolic pathways to turn sunlight into sugar.

In a Nutshell

Metabolism is all the chemical work that keeps living things alive and active.
