3rd Grade Science

Investigating ecosystems, matter, and energy through hands-on experiments and observations.

Basic Concepts

The Matter Around Us

Exploring Matter

Matter is everything you can see, touch, smell, or taste. It makes up all the objects around us, from the air we breathe to the water we drink.

The Three States of Matter

  • Solid: Has a shape of its own (like a rock).
  • Liquid: Takes the shape of its container (like water).
  • Gas: Spreads out to fill its space (like air).

Changing States

Matter can change from one form to another:

  • Solid to liquid: melting (ice to water)
  • Liquid to gas: evaporation (water to vapor)
  • Gas to liquid: condensation (clouds to rain)

Why Matter Matters

Understanding matter helps us see how things work, from how ice melts on a hot day to how we breathe.

Try observing the changes in matter at home, like watching an ice cube melt or water boil!

Examples

  • An ice cube melting into water.

  • Steam rising from a hot cup of cocoa.

In a Nutshell

Matter is everything around us and can be solid, liquid, or gas.

Key Terms

Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Solid
A state of matter with a fixed shape and volume.
Liquid
A state of matter that takes the shape of its container.
Gas
A state of matter that spreads out to fill its container.
