Investigating ecosystems, matter, and energy through hands-on experiments and observations.

Practical Applications

Building a Mini Ecosystem

Create Your Own Ecosystem

You can build a small ecosystem in a jar or a plastic container to see how living and non-living things interact.

What You Need

  • A clear container
  • Soil
  • Small plants
  • Tiny insects or worms
  • Water

Steps

  1. Add soil to the container.
  2. Plant small plants.
  3. Add a few insects or worms.
  4. Water lightly and cover with a lid (with small holes for air).

Watch what happens over days and weeks. Notice how the plants grow and how the insects move around. You’ve made a living system!

Examples

  • Creating a terrarium on your windowsill.

  • Observing worms helping plants in a jar ecosystem.
