3rd Grade Science

Investigating ecosystems, matter, and energy through hands-on experiments and observations.

Basic Concepts

Energy in Our World

Understanding Energy

Energy is what makes things happen! It allows us to move, keeps us warm, and helps plants grow. Energy is all around us and comes in many forms.

Types of Energy

  • Light energy: From the sun, helps plants grow.
  • Heat energy: Keeps us warm, like from a heater or the sun.
  • Sound energy: When you hear music or a dog barking.
  • Movement energy: When you run, jump, or ride a bike.

Energy Changes

Energy can change from one form to another. When you eat food, your body changes it into movement energy so you can play!

Energy in Nature

Plants use sunlight (light energy) to make their own food. Animals get energy by eating plants or other animals.

Try noticing all the ways energy helps you every day, from turning on a light to riding your bike!

Examples

  • Plants using sunlight to grow.

  • A child running after eating breakfast.
