Solving Problems with More Than One Step

Multi-Step Math

Some problems need more than one calculation. You might have to add first and then subtract, or the other way around.

How to Tackle It

  1. Read the problem and figure out each step.
  2. Write down what you need to do first.
  3. Solve each part one at a time.
  4. Check your work at the end.

Why This Matters

Multi-step problems help you think in order and solve challenges, just like following a recipe or building with blocks!

Examples

  • You have 12 apples. You buy 8 more and eat 3. How many do you have? (12 + 8 = 20, 20 - 3 = 17)

  • There are 15 candies. 5 friends arrive and bring 2 candies each. How many candies now? (5 x 2 = 10, 15 + 10 = 25)

In a Nutshell

Some problems need more than one math step to solve.
